I’ve just read your article, “The old Britney versus the new” and wow. I never really thought about it until I read this. Personally, my favourite singer is Janis Joplin. But Britney was the first singer I was ever aware of in my childhood. She’s always kept a place with me straight into my adulthood. But I never thought of why. Why I can’t just listen to 1 song of hers, why her voice is addicting…. I never really ‘related’ to her music–I liked it. I knew the dance and all the lyrics but I never had that “she’s totally understanding me” like I had with Janis.

Then I read your brilliantly well-written article and it got me thinking. What do I like about Britney Spears? Her personality. I love her personality. She’s the kind of person you want to have a glass of wine with. I like that her personality–her “character” is portrayed into all of her songs. That’s what I find relatable. Not her lyrics or the melodies but her personality.

Even now, she’s in her mid-thirties, I’ve listened to ‘Glory’ a million times and I still can’t put it down. Though she’s all ‘grown up’, she’s still that same loveable and *relatable* person I felt like I knew as a kid. You know what I mean? That’s what makes her so distinct and different compared to every other pop star and I think that’s her staying power in the extremely fickle industry.

Thanks for writing that article.

  • Sarah G: You should write an In-Depth of Glory or even Mood Ring (that's a groovy tune)
  • Sarah Giansanti: First off, yeah! I've missed your writing haha Secondly, I've always been baffled of how people can say Britney's not a singer... Derr, that's her
  • Aline: Great article as usual. Please Karen, never stop writing for the site. I love your thoughts about our queen!
